Add in the occasional flute and melodica solo and some downright killer horns and Phantom transforms into a seriously slaved-over and sophisticated exercise in pop rock indulgence which always remains beautifully light breezy and easy - not to mention infectious as hell. Instead you get one hell of a masterfully played feel-good sonic arsenal complete with female backing singers heaps of playful percussion funked-up basslines and Sakamoto’s light and fluttering guitar licks. Acting as the logical extension of Yura Yura Teikoku’s 2007 swan song Hollow Me/Beautiful (reissued domestically by the taste-making DFA) Phantom once again embraces a ’70s throwback rock template very much of the soft/yacht/sophisti-pop variety but without a hint of indie irony or redundancy.
